Common Octopus

One of the most striking characteristics that the octopus has apart from its appearance is also its defence tactics!

An octopus has the ability to hide in plain sight. Using a network of pigment cells and specialised muscles in its skin, the common octopus can almost instantaneously match the colours, patterns, and even textures of its surroundings and hide from predators.

Not only that, if they are discovered by a predator an octopus will release a cloud of black ink to hinder its attacker's view.

Did you know?

All species of octopus have very short lifespans, reaching at most just three years. The Common octopus tends to live for around two years.

Where do they live?

The Common octopus is found in the tropical and temperate waters of the world’s oceans.
